Welcoming a new baby into the world is one of life’s most transformative experiences — and while nothing can truly prepare you for parenthood, there are ways to make the journey a little smoother. If you're a mum-to-be in the nesting phase or just starting to get your bearings, this guide is for you.

We’ve rounded up the most helpful (and realistic!) ways to prep before your little one arrives — from hospital bags to nursery must-haves, hygiene essentials (yes, we’re looking at you, Buggalugs case), and emotional readiness.

1. Prep Your Hospital Bag Early

You don’t want to be scrambling when the contractions kick in. A packed hospital bag by 35–36 weeks is ideal.

For Baby:

  • Newborn onesies (zip-up are a lifesaver!)

  • Swaddles and a cosy blanket

  • Nappies and wipes

  • Dummy or pacifier — safely packed in a Buggalugs case to keep it clean and germ-free

For Mum:

  • Comfortable clothes (button-down tops for breastfeeding ease)

  • Maternity pads and nursing bras

  • Toiletries and skincare

  • Snacks and a water bottle (labour is hungry work!)

Tip: Pack in cubes or zip pouches to keep everything organised and easy for your partner to find.

2. Set Up the Nursery for Practicality, Not Perfection

Forget Instagram aesthetics — your nursery should be practical and functional. Focus on what you’ll actually use:

  • A comfortable feeding chair

  • Changing table or change mat set-up

  • Clothes sorted by size (0–3 months are your go-to)

  • Storage baskets for nappies, wipes, and baby care essentials

Bonus: Create a mini nappy station in the living room or wherever you spend most of your day. Having basics close by is a game changer.

3. Stock Up on Hygiene Essentials

Your newborn’s immune system is still developing, and keeping things clean is one of the best ways to prevent unnecessary bugs and visits to the doctor.

Add to your prep list:

  • Gentle baby bath wash and lotion

  • Washcloths and soft towels

  • Steriliser or bowl for sterilising dummies

  • Buggalugs Pacifier Case — the easiest and most hygienic way to store your baby’s dummy on the go (and it clips to your nappy bag or pram!)

4. Do a Dummy Run (Pun Intended!)

Get familiar with how to use the car seat, stroller, baby carrier and swaddles. You don’t want to be figuring it out mid-nap-meltdown!

  • Practice installing the car seat

  • Learn to fold and unfold the pram (you’ll thank yourself later)

  • Try on the baby carrier so it’s adjusted and ready

5. Prepare Yourself Emotionally

While the baby prep can be fun, don’t forget the mental load. Your emotions are going to be stretched in all directions once your little one arrives.

  • Talk openly with your partner about expectations, boundaries, and support

  • Consider lining up a postnatal doula or asking for help from family

  • Give yourself grace — you're not meant to do it all perfectly

Pregnancy prep isn’t just about ticking off a to-do list — it’s about creating space (physically and mentally) to welcome your baby with a little more calm and confidence.

At Buggalugs, we believe that small things make a big difference — like having a clean, easy-to-reach dummy when you’re out and about. Our pacifier cases are made from eco-friendly PLA and clip straight to your nappy bag or pram, so you’re always one step ahead.

You've got this, mumma.
